Après un examin en trois parties: examen théorique, épreuve de survie et d'orientation, puis tournoi, certains Genins peuvent devenir Chuunins. L'épreuve finale qui consiste donc en des combats à un contre un est jugée par les Kages et les seigneurs des villages. La réussite des combats n'est pas forcement signe de graduation. Le style, la stratégie ou l'originalité entrent en ligne de compte. C'est le cas de Shikamaru, qui bien qu'ayant perdu face à Temari a suffisamment impressioné les juges pour devenir Chuunin. Dans le mangas on verra Shikamaru demander à commander des Jounins (lorsque Tsunade lui annonce la disparition de Sasuke), on peut donc en déduire que la distinction entre Chuunin et Jounin est plus une affaire de force ou de puissance que de stratégie ou refléxion. C'est le grade nécessaire pour devenir professeur à l'academie des ninjas. Les chuunins peuvent être envoyés en missions seuls ou par groupe (de 4 généralement) comme Shikamaru, ils peuvent aussi être affectés à l'administration du village (les surveillants de l'examen chuunin ou les secrétaires de Tsunade).
